Especially thick EH36 plates, which are produced by ingot steel, delivery time is long and a minimum volume is required in order to start production at the steel mill.
In addition the number of steel mills which are able to produce marine grade plates above 80mm is also limited.
With the largest stock available in Europe, Stigterstaal is able to directly supply all your EH36 requirements up to 250mm in various lengths and widths , fast and door to door when required.
Concerning the origin of our ” EH36 / EH40 and FH36 plates, you will only find materials from “AAA” steel mills from Western Europe to guarantee quality in respect to mechanical and chemical properties but also surface conditions.
All materials are produced according to the appropriate Euro norms, EN 10029, EN 10163-2 and 3.2 certification according to EN 10204.

In the offshore industry, heavy marine grade plates are being used next to the traditional offshore grade plates like S355G10+M / N, nowadays S355MLO.
In the production of offshore floating wind projects as well as tidal wave units, thick EH36 plates are often being used as profiled parts or for example rolled into tubulars.
In addition products like suction cans, offshore grillages and sponsoons are produced amongst others by using “thick” EH36 plates.

Heavy plates in shipbuilding are used in various locations of the hull like reinforcement plates for crane foundations, fabrication of winches but also below the engine block for instance.
Especially in the case that heavy deck equipment is mounted onto the vessel, the required plate will need to be relatively thicker. Consequently, these foundation plates often also require Z35 testing which confirms the requirements in the Z-direction of the plate.
As mentioned earlier, other applications for “thick” EH36 material are seen for deck equipment as like offshore winches, pipe laying equipment, tensioners, turret mooring systems and cranes. These products are also produced under class and therefore require the appropriate 3.2 class material.
Vessels which are built to operate in “cold” area’s require low temperature impact tested material like EH36 ( impact tested at -40°C ) and sometimes even FH36 ( impact tested at -60°C ) is used in certain parts of these vessel.
Another trend in the shipbuilding industry is the need for lighter construction, therefore the grade EH40 is becoming more common. This material grade has a superior yield point compared to EH36 and therefore designers are able to use thinner plates with similar strength.
